Air Cooling: This method uses air to cool the battery and can be either passive or active. Passive air cooling uses air from the outdoors or from the cabin to cool or heat the battery. Active air cooling, on the other hand, gets its air intake from an air conditioner, which includes an evaporator and a heater to control the air’s temperature. It is more complex and expensive but provides better performance.
Liquid Cooling: This is the most popular cooling technology. It uses a liquid coolant such as water, a refrigerant, or ethylene glycol to cool the battery. The liquid goes through tubes, cold plates, or other components that surround the cells and carry heat to another location, such as a radiator or a heat exchanger. Some thermal management systems use a direct-contact medium such as oil or other dielectric liquids that are directly in contact with the cells.
These cooling systems are part of a larger Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) that optimizes temperature management between components such as the battery, the HVAC system (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), the electric motor, and the inverter. When the motor heats up, for example, heat can be redirected into the cabin or the battery to make the best use of energy.
